Running hard in the rubber left by the Project Car Kombi and Cobra editions, Sidchrome is back with another eye-popping, droolworthy dream instalment: a 1969 Ford Mach 1 Mustang fastback.
Sidchrome has a bit of heritage when it comes to Mustangs. Jim Richards raced the Sidchrome Mustang in the V8 Supercars series back in the 1970s and enjoyed great success. So when the opportunity came to build one of the classic American muscle cars into another example of rebuild and design excellence, Sidchrome couldn’t break out the grander spanners quick enough.
The right people
The team tasked with building this edition of the Sidchrome Project Car are the guys at Team 18 – the same guys responsible for maintaining and tuning the number 18 V8 Supercar driven by Lee Holdsworth in the Virgin Australia Supercar Championship, and all their expertise in building fast V8 supercars will be channelled into the Sidchrome Mustang. But first there’s a little work needed to get the ’Stang ready for high-end tuning. If it was just a matter of painting a new car it wouldn’t be the challenge Sidchrome loves. The bodywork, looking just a little second-hand right now, will be finished in PPG paint to help bring together the resto-mod look the guys at Sidchrome are looking for. And after surviving an amazing 48 years, the original 351 V8 Ford factory motor will be entrusted to the guys at Saliba Engine Reconditioning, who themselves have a history of building V8 supercar engines. They’ll be bringing this baby back to life – and giving her a massive injection of horsepower of course. Harrop Engineering has also joined the allstar line-up and will be supplying the brake pack and custom-forged line wheels which will be wrapped in awesome Pirelli rubber from Trofeo Motorsport Tyres. Making sure the Sidchrome Mustang rides and handles like a dream, the guys from RRS have come to the party with a new suspension pack. And when you’re cruising you’re going to want to be blaring the tunes, so the guys from Clarion will be supplying the wicked sound system.
